The Uganda Poetry Society has announced the establishment of a new literary distinction — The Dr. Ivan Edwards Poetry Award.

This honor, named after Dr. Ivan Edwards, a Ugandan-born American physician, poet, and thought leader, represents more than a prize; it is a beacon of recognition for the transformative power of words. 

The award carries a $1,000 award.  It represents the Society’s commitment to nurturing poetic talent and elevating voices that might otherwise remain unheard.

Dr. Edwards’ life embodies resilience, creativity, and service — from his work as a physician and USAF Reserve Flight Surgeon to his contributions as an author and poet. The award reflects this multidimensional legacy, encouraging poets to write with courage, clarity, and conviction.
