The article is part of the “Family Matters / Work‑Life” section and focuses on mental health strategies for military officers. It emphasizes that while officers are trained for endurance, crisis management, and high‑stakes decision‑making, they also face a hidden battle: maintaining mental resilience and work‑life balance outside of duty.

✨ Key Points

Constant pressure: Military officers operate under intense physical, mental, and emotional demands.

Impact on families: Stress can spill into personal life, leading to fatigue, withdrawal, and strained relationships.

Resilience strategies:

Practice mindfulness and stress regulation.

Set healthy boundaries despite service demands.

Reserve evenings/weekends for family and friends.

Use non‑operational tours or downtime to focus on personal identity.

Leadership role: Officers in command should support their teams’ balance with flexible policies, which improve productivity and morale.

Perspective: A military career is described as a marathon, not a sprint — pacing oneself and intentionally prioritizing time off duty is essential.

This piece is a soul-anchoring affirmation for those navigating grief, trauma, or emotional fatigue. It opens with a distilled truth—“Pain refines, but grace restores”—setting the tone for a journey through hardship toward healing.

Themes:

Resilience: The poem honors the strength found in rising after being weighed down by the past.

Healing: It reframes pain not as a destroyer, but as a sculptor of wisdom and grace.

Hope: Each stanza builds toward a crescendo of empowerment, reminding the reader that storms are not meant to consume, but to reveal inner fire.

Compassionate Presence: The closing lines offer solace—“You are seen, you are heard, and you are never alone”—a gentle benediction for anyone feeling isolated.

Tone & Style:

Reflective and intimate, with a cadence that mimics breath—inhale strength, exhale doubt.

Poetic minimalism meets emotional depth, allowing space for the reader’s own story to echo within the lines.

Impact: This poem doesn’t just speak—it listens. It’s a companion for those in silent battles, a reminder that survival is not just possible, but beautiful.

Update post.

On March 28, 2026, Backyard Bistro in Bugolobi, Kampala, transformed into a vibrant cultural hub as it hosted the inaugural Dr. Ivan Edwards Poetry Award, an event that drew poets, readers, cultural leaders, and arts supporters into what felt like a historic gathering for Uganda’s literary community.

Named after Dr. Ivan Edwards, an award‑winning poet whose work has influenced audiences in Uganda and abroad, the prize has already positioned itself as one of the most prestigious literary honors in East and Central Africa, offering a combined value of US $1,200.

A Ceremony Focused on Excellence

The event emphasized recognition rather than performance. Finalists, judges, and invited guests gathered in a warm, dignified atmosphere to celebrate poets whose work demonstrated originality, emotional depth, and cultural resonance. The tone of the evening highlighted the growing strength and seriousness of Uganda’s literary landscape.

Award Laureates

Atim Priscilla Ariance — US $500 (Spoken Word)

Lus Aziz Al’Fadhul — US $500 (Written Word)

Gumbadia La Joie — US $100 (Youth, Spoken Word)

Praise Nowangye — US $100 (Youth, Written Word)

Photos throughout the article capture the emotion and pride of the winners as they received their awards.

A Spirited Finale

The evening ended with its only performance segment: “Who Is the Poet?”, an unscripted challenge that offered 500,000 UGX to the most inventive participant. The contest brought laughter, excitement, and a burst of spontaneity to an otherwise formal ceremony. Ongom Deogratius emerged as the winner.

A Cultural Milestone

By the close of the night, it was clear that the inaugural Dr. Ivan Edwards Poetry Award had achieved something significant. It elevated poets, strengthened the literary community, and set a new benchmark for artistic recognition in the region. The article frames the event as the beginning of a new chapter in Uganda’s literary story, one marked by pride, excellence, and cultural growth.

Read the full article (with photos):

Backyard Bistro Hosts a Landmark Literary Celebration - (https://kmaupdates.com/2026/03/29/backyard-bistro-hosts-a-landmark-literary-celebration/ )

Update post.

The AF promotion list is out, and I have been selected for Colonel, a milestone only 1–3% of officers ever reach. It has been a very steep climb, one that demanded patience, dedication, resilience, and faith. But one well worth it.

I’m thankful to God, to my family who stood with me through every season, to my great commanders who guided, challenged, and supported me with respect, and to every mentor who saw more in me than I sometimes saw in myself.

To my mother: your strength shaped mine.

To my late father: I carry your lessons with me. I hope I’ve made you proud.

If there’s anything this journey has taught me, it’s this: 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑑𝑜 𝑖𝑡. 𝐷𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑛’𝑡. 𝐾𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑐𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑏𝑖𝑛𝑔. 𝐾𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔. 𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚, 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑡.

Thank you for walking this path with me.

-------------------------------------------

Here’s a five‑line piece that carries the quiet strength of the journey:

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Grateful for the climb that shaped me.

Humbled by the hands that lifted me.

Honored to stand where few have stood.

Every step a lesson, every trial a gift.

And today… I rise with gratitude in my chest.

Inspired by a random act of kindness from a stranger.

---

The world is vast…

mountains that scrape the sky,

oceans that hum their ancient hymns…

yet somehow small enough

for a stranger’s smile

to feel like home.

Travel, and the world opens.

See it.

Hear it.

Let the wind of another land

whisper its stories into your bones.

We are one…

beyond color, beyond race,

beyond the borders we drew

before we knew better.

A mother is a mother

in every language.

A father is a father

wherever the sun rises.

Brothers and sisters,

not by blood,

but by breath.

Taste the delicacies of another’s table,

and you taste their childhood.

You taste their laughter.

You taste their hope.

Listen,

really listen…

to the music of someone else’s life.

It softens you.

It widens you.

It reminds you

that love is the greatest gift

we ever learned to give.

Memories . . .

we make them like footprints in wet sand,

knowing the tide will come,

yet writing them anyway

because living is worth remembering.

And remembering

is another way of living.

Life is precious,

a fragile, glowing ember

cupped in our hands.

Treasure it

today,

now,

and tomorrow.

Walk gently.

Walk boldly.

Walk together.

The world is big,

but we are close.

And we are one.

A recent global review of my poem “Even the Jacaranda Know” revealed layers I never expected — a humbling reminder of how readers give a poem new life.

---

A poem, Even the Jacaranda Know, from my book Resonance of the Soul: Flowers and Harmonics, was recently reviewed on a renowned global African literary platform. The reviewer described it as a sweeping human portrait that “speaks in many voices but breathes through one tree.”

You can read the full review here:

https://muwado.com/even-the-jacaranda-know-a-poem-that-tells-the-human-story/

And the book itself is available on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FJ8W5Z6S

There is something profoundly humbling about receiving such insight from someone who has never met you . . . yet somehow understands the soul of your work. His analysis was brilliant, thoughtful, and deeply appreciated.

I remain grateful for the global attention a little book I typed away many quiet nights on my computer has generated. It is a reminder that even the smallest offerings can travel far beyond the place where they were created.

“Despise not the little things.”

You Are What You Eat: The ABCs of Total Health

By Dr. Ivan Edwards

This article explores how simple, everyday nutrition choices can strengthen the heart, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Drawing from principles in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), it explains how balanced nutrition—paired with active living and consistent self‑care—improves mobility, energy, and long‑term function.

Practical food swaps show how small dietary adjustments can lower LDL cholesterol, improve blood vessel flexibility, and reduce cardiovascular risk. These choices also enhance soft‑tissue repair, muscle recovery, and overall resilience.

Total health begins with total care, and these simple shifts offer a powerful foundation for lifelong wellness.

Read the full article: https://www.findatopdoc.com/Expert/3480007-Ivan-Edwards/You-Are-What-You-Eat-The-ABCs-of-Total-Health

I’m honored to share that Resonance of the Soul: Flowers and Harmonics received a deeply reflective review on Muwado, one of Africa’s leading storytelling platforms.

The reviewer explored Even the Jacaranda Know and highlighted how the poem speaks to five groups we all recognize in society:

• For the struggling and disadvantaged: “worth is not defined by circumstances; hardship is a season, not an identity.”

• For the ambitious and restless: “ambition without grounding leads to emptiness; wealth without peace is another form of poverty. “

• For the servants of society: “their work is sacred”— teachers, doctors, nurses, firefighters, and others who carry unseen burdens.

• For leaders: “power is responsibility; authority fades, but legacy remains. “

• For the everyday human soul: meaning is found when we “pause, breathe, and let life recalibrate the spirit.”

Seeing a reviewer engage with the poem’s themes at this depth is humbling and energizing.

Read the full review here: https://muwado.com/even-the-jacaranda-know-a-poem-that-tells-the-human-story/

Source:

Review published on Muwado https://muwado.com/even-the-jacaranda-know-a-poem-that-tells-the-human-story/

The Uganda Poetry Society has announced the establishment of a new literary distinction — The Dr. Ivan Edwards Poetry Award.

This honor, named after Dr. Ivan Edwards, a Ugandan-born American physician, poet, and thought leader, represents more than a prize; it is a beacon of recognition for the transformative power of words.

The award carries a $1,000 award.* It represents the Society’s commitment to nurturing poetic talent and elevating voices that might otherwise remain unheard.

Dr. Edwards’ life embodies resilience, creativity, and service — from his work as a physician and USAF Reserve Flight Surgeon to his contributions as an author and poet. The award reflects this multidimensional legacy, encouraging poets to write with courage, clarity, and conviction.

Addendum

*In November 2025, the Uganda Poetry Society established an award in his honor: the Dr. Ivan Edwards Poetry Award, now recognized as one of the highest‑value poetry prizes in East and Central Africa. The award currently totals US $1,200, with US $1,000 designated for the adult category and US $200 for poets under 18.

Silence can be golden . . .
when it’s chosen,
when it’s peaceful,
when it’s rooted in wisdom.

But silence imposed by circumstance?
Silence born of trauma,
stigmatization,
or oppression?
Silence that keeps you from saying what is right?

That silence is not golden.
It’s a cage.
A wound.
A theft.

When silence is forced . . .
by shame,
fear,
or injustice; it doesn’t protect.
It erases.
It robs the world of truth,
of healing,
of transformation.

So, say I: speak.
Even if your voice shakes.
Even if the world isn’t ready.
Even if silence feels safer.

Because your voice
might be the light someone else
needs to find their way out.

-----------------------------

Practical steps to break silence:

Face the truth: Confront shame. Disown it. Truth sets you free.

Speak: Start small — a word, a newsletter, a conversation.

Accept difference: It’s okay to be different. Your opinion matters.

Practice grace: Don’t beat yourself up. Self-compassion is the antidote to shame.

(Excerpt — Dr. Ivan Edwards)

You Don’t Need More Discipline… You Need Less Shame

It’s a declaration of truth for those who stayed, who showed up, who held on — and were still left behind.

“You let yourself go,” he says.

No.

He let himself go.

He wasn’t steadfast.

Wasn’t devoted.

Wasn’t committed.

He let you go . . .

but first,

he let himself go.

He chose the drift.

He chose the distance.

He chose the silence

and called it circumstance.

“I have no time.”

No.

He has time to polish his car.

Time to watch the NFL games on Sundays . . .

the Bills, the Panthers.

Time to scroll, to scroll, to scroll.

But not time to water the garden

he once begged to plant.

You are worth more than chrome and touchdowns.

More than fantasy leagues and fleeting thrills.

You are not the reason he left.

He is.

“It’s because of you.”

No.

It’s because of him.

Choices are not contagious.

Excuses are not explanations.

“I found someone else.”

No . . .

he found a reason to cheat,

to break covenant,

to abandon the sacred

and call it evolution.

His Words Whisper to You

“I felt unseen.”

No.

He closed his eyes.

“There was no intimacy.”

No.

He stopped reaching.

“I had a crisis.”

No.

He had a choice.

“I needed reinvention and find myself.”

No.

He needed discipline.

“We stopped communicating.”

No.

He stopped listening.

“I gave too much.”

No.

He withheld what mattered.

“I was tired.”

No.

He was absent.

What More?

Infidelity is not a storm that sweeps in . . .

it’s a door opened,

a vow unguarded.

Culture didn’t make him leave.

Masculinity didn’t make him lie.

Freedom didn’t make him forget

what love requires.

Yes . . . mental health matters.

Yes . . . trauma distorts.

But even in the fog,

we are responsible

for the bridges we burn

and the hearts we bruise.

Final Word

So no . . .

it wasn’t you.

It was never you.

You didn’t let yourself go.

You held on.

You showed up.

You stayed the course.

And that

is love.

This poem is part of a two-part series exploring emotional abandonment and the quiet unraveling of love.
Blog post.

Resonance of the Soul Featured by Literary Titan

I’m honored to share that my book, Resonance of the Soul: Flowers and Harmonics, recently received a five-star review from the editors at Literary Titan.

Following the review, I was invited to reflect on the book’s poetic architecture, spiritual undertones, and harmonic themes through a series of thoughtful interview questions. Their inquiry opened a space for deeper contemplation . . . one I felt compelled to share here.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you can read it at Motivational & Inspirational Poetry | LITERARY TITAN

Below are some excerpts.

__________________________________________________________________________________

What was the biggest challenge you faced in putting together this poetry collection?

Time. Not just the literal hours needed to write and revise, but the emotional timing—knowing when I was ready to revisit certain memories, and when the world might be ready to receive them. Balancing my clinical responsibilities with the vulnerability required to write was also a challenge. But I learned that when something truly matters, you make time for it.

How has this poetry book changed you as a writer, or what did you learn about yourself through writing it?

I’ve come to appreciate the effort and emotional discipline it takes to create something meaningful. Writing this book taught me that poetry isn’t just about language—it’s about listening, about honoring silence, and about crafting space for others to feel seen. I learned that my voice carries weight not because it’s loud, but because it’s rooted in truth. And I discovered that healing—whether clinical or poetic—requires presence, patience, and grace.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
