We are all aging. Or getting higher in calendar years.
A patient handed me an article recently. He was a little worried, convinced that crossing 50 meant crossing a line. He thought cognitive decline was our destiny.
I read it, looked at him, and simply said, “No worries.”
Yes, the brain changes. Microglia shift. New cells arrive. Inflammation rises, potentially at risk of causing cognitive decline.
But there is a deeper story.
Neuroplasticity does not retire at 50. Neither does our cognitive reserve status. Lifestyle status (with respect to movement, learning, sleep, nutrition, etc) remains a powerful shield.
